Poland has banned the entry of a member of the Lviv regional council.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski initiated a ban on entry into the country for депутат (member of parliament) of the Lviv regional council, Святослав Шеремета. The decision is related to Шеремета's initiative to declare 2027 as the Year of the UPA and its members, which has caused criticism in Warsaw.
Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski signed a request to the Office for Foreigners regarding the inclusion of Львівської обласної ради (Lviv Oblast Council) deputy, Sławomir Szeremeta, on a list of individuals undesirable in Poland. Sikorski announced this on October 22, noting that Szeremeta is "a restorer of the 'Galicia' division" and the initiator of declaring 2027 as the Year of Roman Shukhevych, the commander of the UPA, who issued orders for the expulsion and killing of Poles.
The reason for this decision was the initiative by Sheremet to declare the year 2027 as the Year of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, its commander Roman Shukhevych, and the figure of the OUN, Oleh Olzhych. The Lviv regional council adopted the corresponding resolution on October 20, but later that same day, the text of the resolution disappeared from the council's official website.
Sviatoslav Sheremeta himself commented on the situation, noting that this is "our history, our heroes, and we must properly honor their memory." Deputy head of the Polish MFA, Marcin Bosacki, stated that Warsaw has assurances from the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy's, circle that this decision by the regional council will not come into effect, but Poland is still awaiting an official response from the Ukrainian side.
Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, called the decision of the Lviv regional council "illogical" and "harmful to Ukraine itself," describing it as a "suicidal tactic." At the same time, he noted that he does not associate this initiative with President Zelenskyy, with whom, according to him, significant work has been done to normalize bilateral relations.
