In Lviv, the 20th heart transplant was performed this year.
In the Lviv Center for Transplantation, a 58-year-old man with ischemic cardiomyopathy successfully received a heart transplant. The patient's heart ejection fraction was only 20%, making transplantation the only chance of survival. Thanks to the consent of the donor's family, four people now have a chance at life.
The transplantation center in Lviv performed the 20th heart transplant this year. The surgery was performed on a 58-year-old man who had been diagnosed with ischemic cardiomyopathy. According to doctors, the patient's heart was functioning at critically low levels, as the heart muscle had weakened and lost its ability to effectively pump blood. The ejection fraction, which is the percentage of blood that the heart pumps out during each contraction, was only 20%, compared to the normal range of 55–60%.
Doctors at the Transplantation Center emphasized that the only chance for the patient's survival was a heart transplant. The man was waiting for a donor organ, and the team of cardiologists successfully performed the operation.
The Center also reported that, thanks to the donor's family's consent, four people now have a chance at life.
