On the night of October 28, a 45-year-old man was hospitalized at the Lviv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital, suspected of having tropical malaria. Laboratory tests confirmed the diagnosis, and doctors assess the patient's condition as serious.
According to Dr. Yarina Chaikylo, an infectious disease specialist, the man has lived and worked in the Central African Republic for a long time, and he came to Lviv on vacation to visit his family. He has already been sick with tropical malaria five times, so he is familiar with the symptoms of the disease. The doctor emphasized that immunity is not developed after having the disease.
The patient arrived at the hospital with a high fever, intoxication, and general weakness. He began receiving antimalarial medications that evening. This is the sixth case of imported tropical malaria in Lviv this year. The last case was recorded in August 2026.
Tropical malaria is the most severe form of this disease, and in 40% of cases, it results in death. The disease is transmitted through the bites of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. According to the WHO, the risk of infection exists in 87 countries around the world, mainly in Africa, South Asia, and the Americas. Before traveling to countries with a risk of malaria, it is advisable to consult a doctor about chemoprophylaxis.
