At the Lviv Children's Medical Center, two young girls, Sofia, who is 2 years and 9 months old, and four-year-old Bozhena, underwent kidney transplants. Both patients received the organs from a single deceased donor. This was announced by the medical center on Thursday, October 8.
The surgeries were performed simultaneously in a single operating room and lasted approximately five hours. After the procedures, the children's condition is stable, and the test results are normal. Both have been discharged from the hospital.
Sofia was admitted to the Children's Medical Center on Christmas Eve in 2025 year. Before that, she had suffered a severe infection with pneumonia, which led to a serious kidney failure; it was not possible to restore kidney function, so the child began undergoing peritoneal dialysis. She was waiting for a transplant for less than a year. The girl's mother, Victoria Rybak, said that the family was informed about a potential donor in the middle of the night, and everything went well.
Four-year-old Bohdana from Zhytomyr was born with a congenital defect in her urinary system and required dialysis from the very beginning of her life. Initially, the girl was treated at the "Okhmatdyte" hospital in Kyiv, and from 2024 year – at the Lviv Children's Medical Center; in total, she underwent peritoneal dialysis for four years. Her mother, Tetyana Yashchuk, said that the path was very difficult, and before the operation, the girl was only allowed to drink no more than 500 ml of water per day; after the transplant, this restriction was lifted.
The donor was a 49-year-old man who died in Kyiv. Following the notification of the availability of organs, a team of doctors from Lviv traveled to the capital to retrieve the kidneys. According to surgeon Andriy Kuzyk, one part of the team transported the organs to Lviv, while the other doctors had already begun the operations on two operating tables and completed the initial stages, leaving only the task of implanting the kidneys.
The Center for Children's Medicine expressed condolences to the family of the deceased donor and thanked them for their decision to donate organs.
