Lviv region prepares for power outages: almost 85% of critical facilities already have generators

In the Lviv region, over a thousand of more than two thousand basic communication stations have been identified as critical – they should be equipped with backup power for 72 hours. Almost 85% of the critical stations with which contracts have been signed have already received generators, and contracts have been signed for 91.4%. Due to Russian attacks on the energy sector, communication may be interrupted during outages, so residents are advised to use national roaming and a power-saving mode on their phones.

In the Lviv region, there are over two thousand basic mobile communication stations. More than a thousand of them have been identified as critical, and they require backup power for 72 hours of autonomous operation.

As of the end of September 2026, generators have been provided for almost 85% of critical base stations with which contracts have been signed. In total, contracts with telecommunications operators have been signed for 91.4% of critical stations, according to Oleksiy Stepovy, head of the Department of Digitalization Development of the Lviv Oblast Administration. According to him, this percentage may decrease soon if the number of stations increases.

Russian attacks on the energy sector continue: On October 6, power outages have already been implemented in certain regions of Ukraine, but there have been no reports of restrictions in Lviv.

During prolonged outages, communication may be unstable or unavailable. Residents are advised to manually connect to another operator's network if their own network is unavailable: national roaming provides basic calls, SMS, and messaging services. If the internet is weak, it is advisable to send a short text message, and to have SIM cards from different operators.

To extend the phone's battery life, experts recommend enabling power-saving mode, reducing screen brightness, closing unnecessary applications, and disabling Bluetooth and location services; and to charge a power bank in advance. In case of a prolonged power outage, you can use "Resilience Hubs," where you can charge your phone and stay warm.

The internet can function without electricity if the provider has backup power and uses GPON technology: in this case, it is sufficient to power the router and optical terminal from a power bank, UPS, or generator. Generators cannot be used in enclosed spaces.
